Medicare Program Breakdown

Medicare comprises four essential parts:

·        Part A – Inpatient hospital coverage

·        Part B – Outpatient medical services (doctors, labs)

·        Part C – Medicare Advantage (combines Parts A, B, and often D)

·        Part D – Standalone prescription drug coverage

Eligibility Overview

Medicare is available to:

·        Individuals aged 65 and older who have contributed to Medicare via payroll taxes

·        Those eligible to purchase Part A based on specific criteria

·        Individuals under 65 on Social Security Disability for at least 24 months

·        Persons diagnosed with specific chronic illnesses or conditions

Key Enrollment Periods

·        Initial Enrollment Period: 3 months before to 3 months after one’s 65th birthday

·        Disability Enrollment: After 24 consecutive months on Social Security Disability

·        Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7 (open to all)

·        Open Enrollment Period (OEP): January 1 – March 31 (plan-to-plan changes)

·        Special Election Periods (SEPs): Triggered by events such as:

1.     Relocation

2.     Loss of employer-provided coverage

3.     Medicaid eligibility

4.     Transition from Medigap to Medicare Advantage within one year
